The Violence Intervention Advocacy Program is housed within the Boston Medical Center’s Emergency Department. The staff treats all of the patients hospitalized due to violence-related injuries, providing them with crisis intervention, case management, and mental health services. The team of social workers, mental health counselors, and doctors assist both the victims and their families as they recover from physical and emotional trauma, empowering them to contribute to building safer communities.
The Violence Intervention Advocacy Program (VIAP) sees more than 450 patients per year, mostly black males in their 20’s who have been shot or stabbed. The Boston Medical Center is where over 65% of Boston’s victims of shootings and stabbings are sent.
The donated artwork hangs in the program’s family room, reception, main office, and refreshment area to help the staff continue to demonstrate their respect for and care of the victims and provide support to the victims and their families.
