Massachusetts Law Reform Institute

Mass Law Reform Institute (MLRI) is a statewide nonprofit poverty law and policy center with a mission to advance economic, racial, and social justice through legal action, policy advocacy, coalition building, and community outreach. Working with low income individuals, families and communities, MLRI addresses issues surrounding housing, domestic violence, health, disability, and language access barriers and more. Special practices focus on fighting for racial equity and the state’s immigrant communities. As the statewide poverty law center, MLRI provides support to nearly 200 local and state community organizations serving low income people with services such as health care, shelter, and food support.
MLRI recently moved into an office space located downtown where their advocates work long hours supporting people in crisis and fighting systems that oppress or harm poor people. Client groups and fellow advocacy coalitions are regularly hosted in this space. Clients that come into the MLRI office often feel marginalized and are accustomed to austere “institutional” settings. When MLRI’s hallways and meeting rooms are filled with original art brings a sense of dignity and hope to people seeking justice who often feel forgotten and will inspire and validate the advocates working to deliver social justice on their behalf.
